I recently stumbled across an article. It was about Vedic Cultures and Sanskrit, and how it plays a major role across cultures.

This article is about how global cultures like Europe,Russia etc have some of its roots derived from Sanskrit.

quoted are a few examples from the article

Name ----- Sanskrit ------ Meaning

1. Russia ----Rishiya ------ Land of the Rishis
2. Moscow ----Moksha -------- Salvation, goal of all Rishis
3. Soviet ------ Svet ------ White,as in white snow covered region

4. Paris ------ Parameshwari ----- Vedic Godess
5. Amsterdam ------ Antardham ------ Region below sea level

This piece is really interesting
6. Scandinavia ------ Skanda ------ Skanda is the son of Lord Siva. Naviya
is Sanskrit for naval settlement.
Scandinavians were the mariner
